A Gentoo penguin waddles along a sandy beach with ocean waves in the background.

This King penguin is headed home after a day of feeding in the southern Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the Falkland Islands. He is returning home to feed his teenager, who is left on the beach a short way from the shore. It was such a treat to get to walk among these rare birds. The male King penguin can reach a height of about three feet. Back on mainland Antarctica, I was able to photograph an Emperor penguin, who was about four feet tall.
