A white seabird with graceful wings soars against a soft blue sky background.

Marvene and I saw a few Arctic Terns in Antarctica in January 2025 and in Iceland in May 2025. However, they zip around overhead quickly, and I had no hope of photographing them. This guy and some of his buddies flew over our Zodiac while we were photographing wildlife in one of the Svalbard, Norway fjords. He hesitated just long enough for me to capture a shot of him. It was a thrilling moment for me, because I had read about these birds and marveled at their migratory patterns. They have the longest migratory patterns of all birds worldwide, spending the northern summer in the Arctic and the southern summer in the Antarctic. This photo was an unexpected treat.
