The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad runs 64-miles between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico. The railroad line was originally constructed in 1880, similar to its sister line, which runs between Durango and Silverton, Colorado.
This is a shot I had envisioned for several years. The opportunity came when Andy, Tim, Willem, and I determined that our Fall 2024 trip was the time to make that happen. I scouted ahead before the others arrived in search for some locations with good views of the train and the fall foliage.
The weather, spectacular fall colors, and the heartiness of the vintage coal-burning engine, #484, all came together for an iconic shot. I believe some of these train photographs were the highlights of the trip.
